Condition We Treat

PTSD & Trauma Treatment

Trauma-informed, compassionate care for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD is not a sign of weakness — it's a treatable response to overwhelming experiences, and many people go on to live full, meaningful lives.

The Restora Psychiatry offers trauma-informed PTSD evaluation and treatment for adolescents (13+), adults, and older adults at our Colonial Heights office and via secure telepsychiatry throughout Virginia.

Recognizing PTSD Symptoms

PTSD symptoms typically fall into four categories and must persist for more than a month to meet diagnostic criteria.

  • Re-experiencing: flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories
  • Avoidance: avoiding reminders, people, or places
  • Arousal: being easily startled, on edge, or irritable
  • Mood and cognition: negative beliefs, guilt, detachment

Who Develops PTSD

PTSD can follow many kinds of trauma — combat, assault, accidents, medical trauma, abuse, or the sudden loss of a loved one. Not everyone exposed to trauma develops PTSD, and risk varies from person to person.

Our Approach to Treatment

We provide compassionate, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care tailored to your needs, and coordinate with trauma-focused therapists when helpful.

  • Medication management (SSRIs such as sertraline and paroxetine; prazosin for nightmares)
  • Coordination with trauma-focused therapy (CPT, Prolonged Exposure, EMDR)
  • Support for sleep, stress management, and daily functioning
  • A safe, paced approach that respects your readiness

Frequently Asked Questions

How is PTSD diagnosed?

A psychiatric provider conducts a thorough evaluation of your symptoms, their duration, and their impact on daily life. Symptoms must persist for more than one month and cause significant distress to meet criteria for a PTSD diagnosis.

Do I have to talk about the trauma in detail right away?

No. Trauma-informed care moves at a pace that feels safe for you. We focus first on stability and trust, and coordinate trauma-focused therapy when you're ready.

Can PTSD be treated with telepsychiatry?

Yes. Telepsychiatry is effective for PTSD, including medication management and ongoing support. Many patients find the comfort and privacy of home especially helpful.
