Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about psychiatric care, telepsychiatry across Virginia, medication management, and what to expect.
Getting Started
Who do you treat?
We provide psychiatric care for adolescents (ages 13 and older), adults, and older adults. Our practice supports a wide range of mental health needs across the lifespan.
What conditions do you treat?
We treat ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD and trauma-related disorders, schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, adjustment disorders, insomnia, and co-occurring substance use disorders, among others.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can book online through our scheduling portal or call us at (804) 391-0659. New patients are welcome, and we offer both in-person and telepsychiatry appointments.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit is a comprehensive evaluation, typically 60–90 minutes. We'll review your symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, and goals, then develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medication, supportive counseling, or referrals.
Telepsychiatry & Locations
Where is your office located?
Our in-person office is in Colonial Heights, Virginia. We also provide secure telepsychiatry to patients throughout Virginia, including Richmond, Chesterfield, Petersburg, Midlothian, and surrounding communities.
Is telepsychiatry as effective as in-person care?
Yes. Research consistently shows telepsychiatry is just as effective as in-person care for most psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and bipolar disorder.
What do I need for a telepsychiatry visit?
You'll need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera, a reliable internet connection, and a private space. We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, and you'll receive a link to join your appointment.
Treatment & Medication
Do you prescribe medication?
Yes. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), our provider can diagnose conditions, prescribe and manage medication, and provide supportive counseling.
How long do psychiatric medications take to work?
Most psychiatric medications take 2–6 weeks to reach their full effect. Early follow-up visits help us monitor your response and adjust your treatment. Never stop a medication abruptly without consulting your provider.
Will I be on medication forever?
Not necessarily. Some people use medication short-term, while others benefit from longer-term treatment. We revisit your plan over time and adjust based on how you're doing and your preferences.
Do you offer therapy?
We focus on psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and supportive counseling, and we coordinate closely with therapists. Combining medication with therapy often produces the best outcomes.
Insurance & Crisis Support
How does payment and insurance work?
Please see our Insurance & Fees page for details on payment options, including self-pay, HSA/FSA, and how we help verify your benefits. We're happy to answer billing questions before your first visit.
What should I do in a mental health crisis?
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any time. Our office is not a 24/7 crisis service.
